As a part of ongoing corrective measures for maintaining maritime
safety, new requirements from the European Community (EC) has been established.
A directive called MED (Marine Equipment Directive) also known as Wheel mark approval
covers all kind of equipment, which has a direct relation to safety.
Equipment like: Emergency transponder for vessels, VDR system (voyage data recorder) navigational
equipment, fire detection system, gas detection system etc. is required to have passed an approval
control for be operation on all EC flagged vessels. This requirement became mandatory for gas
detection systems from end of March 2003.
Omicron has this approval for our gas detection systems. This approval is a sort of general type
approval accepted by all major classification societies when the vessel is EC flag or that the
country of origin is on the requiring list for getting EC membership.
